About this tool

Domain registration data used to be published through the WHOIS protocol. Since 28 January 2025, ICANN treats RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) as the definitive source for all generic top-level domains such as .com, .net and .org, and WHOIS obligations have been retired. RDAP returns structured data over HTTPS.

This tool finds the right registry through IANA's RDAP bootstrap registry and queries it directly. For .com and .net it also follows the link to the registrar's RDAP server, which holds fuller details. Country-code domains that have no RDAP service (for example .eu) are looked up over classic WHOIS instead; .de is queried through DENIC's RDAP service.

How to read the results

  • Registrar — the company the domain was bought through. Changes to the domain are made there.
  • Created / Expires — registration and expiry dates as the registry records them. Registrars may renew a few days before expiry.
  • Status codes — EPP codes such as clientTransferProhibited (transfer lock, good), clientHold/serverHold (domain switched off in DNS), redemptionPeriod and pendingDelete (expired, being deleted).
  • Registrant — for most domains, personal data is redacted because of the GDPR. The registrar's abuse contact or contact form is the legitimate way to reach the holder.
  • No registration found — the registry has no record, which usually means the name is available (some names are reserved).

Limitations

  • Registries decide what they publish. Many country-code registries show only minimal data, and personal data is usually redacted.
  • Registration data is cached here for up to an hour. Registrars can take a few minutes to update the registry after a change.
  • Registry terms usually allow lookups for technical and legal purposes only; do not use the data for marketing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

Both publish domain registration data. RDAP is the modern replacement: it uses HTTPS and JSON, supports internationalised names and lets registries control access to personal data. For gTLDs, ICANN retired the WHOIS requirement on 28 January 2025.

Why can't I see the owner's name?

Since the GDPR took effect in 2018, registries and registrars redact personal contact data by default. Companies sometimes choose to publish their organisation name.

How can I find out when a domain expires?

Look at the "Expires" date. If the domain is not renewed, it usually enters a grace period, then a redemption period, before it is deleted and becomes available again.

Does "not found" mean I can register the domain?

Usually yes, but some names are reserved or blocked by the registry. A registrar's search will tell you for certain and show the price.

Is WHOIS lookup free?

Yes.

Does WHOIS show the domain's price?

No, pricing comes from registrars.
